RULES AND REGULATIONS
2010
Please read carefully. You are responsible for reading and following all rules.
ADMINISTRATION
The Competition will be administered by the Pacific National Exhibition (the "PNE") and specifically by such person or persons designated by the PNE for such purpose from time to time (the "Administrator").
WHO CAN ENTER
Red Robinson's Talent Showdown (the "Competition") is open to legal residents of British Columbia within the ages as set out below. Neither employees of the PNE contract employees, members of the Board of Directors, contractors and agents of the PNE directly involved in the Competition nor any other persons directly associated with the Competition, nor the immediate families of any of the aforesaid persons nor any other person residing in the same household, are eligible to enter or compete in the Competition.
Contestants must be amateur, non-professional performers. The determination of who is an amateur is in the sole discretion of the Administrator and the judges of the Competition (the "Judges") and the Administrator or the Judges may refuse to consider any entry from or performance by any person who may be considered by them not to be an amateur or group containing a person who may be considered by them not to be an amateur. For the purpose of the Contest, a person to be considered an amateur must at least meet all of the following criteria:
- someone who is not nor has ever been a member of a union connected with public artistic performances;
- someone who does not earn and has not ever earned more than 50% of his or her annual income from performing;
- someone who has not sung or performed on a record, CD or video released for commercial distribution;
- someone who is not a party to a management or booking contract with a professional firm or individual who is paid a fee for securing employment in the entertainment field;
- someone who does not have a current recording contract with a distribution company.
Contestants must be at least six years of age as of August 22, 2010. Contestants will compete in one of three age divisions. Group acts must compete in the age division of the oldest member of their group. At the final level of the competition, Contestants will be judged against each other, regardless of age division. The following are the age divisions:
- Kids Division: Contestants must be at least six years of age by August 22, 2010 and not over the age of 12 by August 22, 2010.
- Youth Division: Contestants must be at least 13 years of age by August 22, 2010, and not over the age of 18 by August 22, 2010.
- Adult Division: Contestants must be at least 19 years of age by August 22, 2010.
Contestants may only enter once, either as an individual performer or as a member of a group.
Groups may have no more than five (5) members.
First place winner of the Competition will not be eligible to compete in the same age division of any subsequent edition of the Competition or any variation thereof associated with Red Robinson and the PNE.
HOW TO ENTER
Complete an entry form online at www.pne.ca/TalentShowdown or pick up an entry form package in person from the Pacific National Exhibition Administration Building, 2901 East Hastings Street, Vancouver. Entry forms must be completed and received by the PNE office no later than 4:30pm on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. The Administrator in its sole discretion may accept or refuse to accept entry forms that are late, incomplete or illegible.
Along with an entry form an audition video VHS or DVD or YouTube link must be submitted. All audition material must have been recorded within the last 12 months. Only one performance is permitted per VHS tape or DVD or YouTube. Performance videos and entry forms must be received in the PNE office no later than 4:30pm on Wednesday June 9, 2010, failing which the Administrator may refuse to accept the entry. Videos must be clearly labeled with the ID number you were given when you completed your entry form online or if you entered manually ensure your full name and contact number are on the tape or DVD. YouTube links must be titled with performer name and contest name. Videos not properly labeled may not be considered. No person shall be entitled to the return of any videos submitted.
Contestants acknowledge that the PNE is not affiliated in any way with YouTube and a submission made by a Contestant via YouTube is the sole responsibility of the Contestant, including the ability of the PNE to access the submission. Any YouTube submissions that cannot be accessed by the PNE for any reason whatsoever will be deemed not to have been received. Contestants are responsible for compliance with YouTube's Terms of Use.
ENTRY DEADLINE
Entry forms and videos must be received by 4:30pm on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Packages received after the deadline will not be considered regardless of the postmark date. Contestants must submit both their entry form AND audition video by the deadline.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
No performance on any video submitted nor as performed during the live portion of the Competition may exceed four (4) minutes in length as determined by the Administrator or the Judges. The performance is timed from the first sound, live or recorded, or movement, and will include all musical introductions and tags. Performances exceeding four (4) minutes at the semi-final and final level will be disqualified.
Accompaniment in any performance must assume the character of true accompaniment. The test shall be whether the act can stand alone without the accompaniment as determined by the Judges in their sole discretion. Without limiting the foregoing the following shall apply to accompaniment:
- Vocal performances: Instrumental accompaniment by the person(s) in the act or others is allowed, but must assume the pure character of accompaniment. Instrumental back-up music may be used in a CD format. Limited harmonies or utterances may be used on back-up music. The judges must be able to clearly hear the vocal performer over the backing track and any utterances.
- Dance performances: Accompanists are permitted on the stage, but must not assume visual importance. The accompaniment, whether live or recorded, must not have any taps or tap effects.
- Instrumental group: Accompaniment is allowed but the back up must assume pure character of the accompaniment in that the contestant must be able to stand alone were the accompaniment removed from the performance. Air bands are not permitted.
All persons assuming visual importance in a variety performance (e.g. magicians, jugglers) must meet the age requirements of the specific division.
Any performance containing any profane language, swearing or suggestive lyrics or actions not suitable for a family audience as determined by the Administrator or the Judges will be disqualified and the Administrator or the Judges may refuse to accept an entry containing any of the aforesaid.
All props must be inanimate and kept to a minimum. No performances may include the use of machetes, knives, or other similar prop and the Administrator or the Judges may refuse to accept any entry employing such items. Fire and/or pyrotechnics are not allowed on the stage at anytime nor will such material otherwise be included in any performance.
JUDGING
Competitors will be judged on the following criteria:
- Natural ability = 20%
- Stage presence = 20%
- Audience appeal = 20%
- Quality of performance = 40%
The Judges will consist of a panel of four persons appointed by the Administrator. The Judges will review all video entries and invite selected performances from each age division to compete in the semi-finals held at the 2010 Fair at the PNE on such days and at such times location as determined by the Administrator. The number of such selections will be at the discretion of the Judges or the Administrator.
Semi-finalists will compete against Contestants from the same age division. Judges will select a First, Second and Third place winner from each competition day to advance to the finals.
There will be no age divisions in the finals. Finalists will compete against each other regardless of age. The judges will select a Third, Second and Overall winner. The Judges will select the top ranking Youth Contestant to represent the PNE at the 2010 Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (C.A.F.E.) Canadian Youth Talent Competition November, 2010 in Calgary Alberta. The selected Youth Contestant must qualify within the rules and regulations of C.A.F.E. If the selected Contestant can not participate in the C.A.F.E. competition, an alternative Youth representative will be chosen by the Judges.
The Judges' decisions are final. Any questions or comments are to be directed to Red Robinson's Talent Showdown organizers. No verbal contact is permitted between competitors or their representatives and the Judges at any levels of competition. Failure to comply may result in disqualification.
NOTIFICATION
Contestants selected to advance to the semi-finals will be notified by mail or email no later than July 9, 2010.
On each day of the semi-finals, three (3) contestants will be selected to advance to the finals. The names of these Contestants will be announced in front of the live audience.
The winners at the finals will be announced in front of the live audience at the Fair at the PNE on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010. The names of all winners will later be posted on www.pne.ca/TalentShowdown.
PRIZES
Semi-finalists who place third in their day of semi-final competition will receive One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) in Canadian Dollars.
Semi-finalists who place second in their day of semi-final competition will receive Two Hundred Dollars ($200.00) in Canadian Dollars.
Semi-finalists who place first in their day of semi-final competition will receive Three Hundred Dollars ($300.00) in Canadian Dollars.
Following the semi-finals all finalists will compete against all of the categories for the grand prizes.
The Third place winner of the finals will receive One Thousand Dollars ($1000.00) in Canadian Dollars.
The Second Place winner of the finals will receive Two Thousand Dollars ($2000.00) in Canadian Dollars.
The First place and overall winner will receive Five Thousand Dollars ($5000.00) in Canadian Dollars.
The contest has overall prizing worth $10,000 including prize money and gifting.
GENERAL CONDITIONS
The PNE reserves the right to make any final decisions on all matters not covered by these rules and regulations, as well as the right to change, alter and/or rearrange parts or all of these competition rules and regulations at any time.
The PNE is not responsible for any expenses incurred by Contestants.
Contestants grant the PNE the right to photograph, film, video and/or digitally record their performance at the PNE or in conjunction with the Competition for future promotional purposes.
All entries and submissions and the content thereof become the sole and exclusive property of the PNE and may not be returned.
The Contestant acknowledges and agrees that by his or her submission of a video recording the Contestant grants permission to the PNE to utilize all or any portion of the content thereof (including any likeness contained thereon and any voice or other sound) in any form and for such purposes and in any medium as the PNE may determine in its discretion, and the Contestant releases the PNE and its agents and contractors from any obligation to pay compensation of any kind to the Contestant in consideration for the PNE's utilization of the images, likenesses or sounds contained in the submission and the Contestant waives any rights to any claim for compensation or damages respecting the use of same by the PNE.
By submission of the video recording, the Contestant represents and warrants that he or she has obtained a similar release and waiver in favour of the PNE from any and all other persons shown or heard on the video recording submission.
YouTube submissions are the responsibility of the contestant in how they circulate their audition. The PNE will use the link to view the audition. The PNE can not be held responsible for any additional online viewing of other parties as a result of a public posting. The circulation of the YouTube posting is the responsibility of the contestant.
As a condition of the Contestant being permitted to compete in Competition, each Contestant i) grants permission to the PNE to use, without compensation of any kind to such contestant, any photograph, audio or video tape or other audio or visual image or recording including digital recordings, or any portion or portions thereof, in such manner as the PNE may determine including in any promotions or advertising, and ii) waives any right to any fee or compensation for any of the aforesaid and iii) releases the PNE from any loss, damage, injury, or expense which the Contestant may suffer or incur as a result of his or her participation in the Competition, howsoever caused.
INDEMNITY OF PARENT OR GUARDIAN OF A MINOR
All entries must be signed by each performer, provided that any entry from any person under the age of 19 must also be signed by such minor person's parent or legal guardian (the "Parent/Guardian") consenting to such minor person entering the Competition and acknowledging the consents and waivers and indemnities hereby contained made by such minor person and the Parent/Guardian agrees to indemnify and save harmless the PNE for any loss, damages, costs, expenses, injury, claims or actions, including solicitors costs, which the PNE may suffer or incur by reason of any matter or thing relating to arising from the involvement or participation of the minor person in the Competition.
